The authors are utterly incompetent—no sense of style or structure at all. Where I had been without discovering Pyrramid and trying everything out in the path of thought freedom?

It all ties itself up pretty well, a feat considering how cooky all the subject matter is.
There are several parts eys the book where it reviews and jokingly deconstructs itself. While Shea concentrated mainly on historical novels, Wilson produced over 30 works, mixing fictional novels with nonfiction. This is not a conventional novel.
But the effort required from the thr is at least justified by the depths that are available to be plumbed in his work, and the same goes for the others I listed above. Later on, it is confirmed several secret societies utilize the postal system. The revolutionary thing about Mad was not that it undermined authority, but that it simultaneously undermined itself.
Shea and Wilson were required to cut pages to reduce printing costs on what was seen as a risky venture,  although Wilson states that most of the ideas contained therein made it into his later works.

Obviously I need to at least read the first page or two before I purchase. Has to be read to be believed and even then I’m not sure—it really is preposterous in parts.

Read this book, but be warned their stream of consciousness style of writing is more like Grade V rapids. But also they can sometimes guess something unimaginable right. Part of the fun of the book is deciding which of the several drug-fueled narratives is actually presenting the “real” truth about the Illuminati; each one gives a different account of its true power, purpose, and origins. The face of J. Wilson would bung these memos to Shea as material came in from the researchers—like the memos in the book.
All the whacked out political theories and conspiracy theories are on display here – as well as numerology, religion, crypto-archaeology – everything all mixed up into one psychedelic blender for enjoyment of those that get it. FUCKUP has been working all morning, correlating all the data on this caper and its historical roots, and I programmed him to put it in the form of a novel for easy reading.

If one piqued my interest, I looked it up and more often than not, learned something entirely new. One of the most interesting ideas of the book, attributed to William S Burroughs, is the 23 enigma and how the number keeps appearing. This book has intrigued me for years! Likewise, in this book, the authors want us to take responsibility for our own parsing of data, refusing to spoon-feed it to us like so much propaganda.

And the time sequence is all out of order in a very pretentious imitation of Faulkner and Joyce. The prevalence of kinky sex in the story reflects the hippie ideal of ” free love “; characters are both liberal-minded and promiscuous.
They had a lot of access to research staff. This book is not to be taken seriously, any more than you would take the conspiracy nuts on the Internet seriously. Start it over and over again and you will always be surprised!
