It is a semi-historical account of one such trial which ended in horrible atrocities and a general disregard for humanity in the face of socio-religious hysteria and upheaval.
That being said, I did enjoy the overall plot and drama of the play and now have newfound respect for the women and men affected by the Salem Witch Trials. But knowing the facts and having then re-imagined are quite a different thing. Crisop Day Lewis is an excellent John Proctor, and it captures the spirit of the text very well. When I saw the film at its release, this scene absolutely terrified me. So in the play, the historical year-old Abigail Williams, the niece of the puritan minister Reverend Parris of Salem is transformed into an oversexed teen. My major irritation was that a number of the characters had similar names – Proctor, Parris and Putnam, oh my!! No rhythm, actors clearly mioler knowing their lines, nothing ever built to a dramatic climax – instead people just seemed to start shrieking out of nowhere. It is a tragic criisol of faith gone wrong and of religion gone haywire, of it contributing to a frenzy of hate and inhuman acts which is a sign of the times.
