There’s a story wxnted this collection in which a woman at a bad party finally feels joy and connection when she lets her hand rest on the roll of fat at her friend’s waist. Right from the beginning, their sexual interactions become infused with fantasy role playingbut one night one of these fantasies goes too far. Because They Too To: I don’t recommend these stories. But Gaitskill is a fantastically talented writer with a great gift for what lies beneath the surface of interpersonal relationships–especially the sadomasochistic ones.

To Mary’s credit, she is a fantastic writer. Thank you for signing up, fellow book lover! But there are no moors in your stories, Mary Gaitskill. The stories of “Because They Wanted To” were incredibly well-written, thought-provoking and – I found – painful, taken in full.

I’ve never read such raw emotion, I don’t think, except for The Golden Notebook b Mary Gaitskill has an incredible talent for putting into writing intimate and often perhaps best-left-unrevealed thoughts, urges, emotions.

Gaitskill’s second collection is a return to the themes of her first, Bad Behavior Aug 02, Brent thfy it really liked it. May 17, Mary rated it really liked it. Conversely, the story “Kiss and Tell” which feels more schematic than the others is interesting primarily as Gaitskill thinking about the ethics of using her own life in her writing.

What I found fascinating about this obsession with sexual powerplays, though, was that Gaitskill’s images and style often reflected this idea of penetration. In my experience there is no living author who can write music or sex like Mary Gaitskill, which makes perfect sense. All I remember is someone smoking, someone eating sausages, someone in an awkward conversation gaitskkll a former lover Mary Gaitskill is probably best known among the general public as the author of the short story the movie Secretary is based on, to the extent that hers is a familiar name beyond circles of serious readers.

Not as good as Don’t Cry, but still wonderful.

Book Review: “Because They Wanted To” by Mary Gaitskill (A Collection of Short Stories)

All of her characters are sickeningly self interested, almost to the point where you wonder if she is like her stories. I mostly disliked these stories because they express a particularly ugly and gaitsikll view of the world and women’s relationships in it. There were a few times when I read thye passage that was like finding out that the emotions I hold deep inside and couldn’t not even articulate to myself, but only feel, have been discovered and put down for everyone to read.


I am fine with no resolution, but nothing even resinates. At others, I’ll admit I was a bit turned on. So, thank you Emily, for recommending this book which would resonate with my life in becajse many ways. Happy Birthday to Us! Mary Gaitskill treats us to an array of flawed folk in this somewhat-seesawing-but-by-and-large-accomplished collection of short fiction.
