Reading these books has been an enjoyable experience! Somehow I am always a little disappointed by the middle story of any sequel, however, this was better than most in that it made me think about current topics that had nothing to do with the story itself which, I imagine. Butler’s philosophy mirrors her experience of racism and human cruelty.
He can see that the gift of ocatvia in the form of symbiosis with alien genes and characters is still a kind of extinction. On the other hand, they are repelled enough by the Oankali that they will not participate in the creation of such constructs themselves. The Oankali love new sensations, love receiving and giving pleasure, so even the most mundane exchanges of information of communications come off as sexual.

The Ooloi have made all humans infertile so the only children born are those made with Rjtes intervention. These humans, called resisters, routinely kidnap children and sell them to different towns, to humans who want and need children, since they are now unable to reproduce themselves.
Humans were then re-introduced to earth. Especially as one person who noted that most of the Resisters had went and built houses again and even had windows on their homes. But I still think that the idea of the “human contradiction” rtes a brilliant piece of social criticism, and the whole human-oankali dilemma continues to fascinate me.
I am eager to find out where things could possibly end up in the third and final book. I just didn’t get how he came to the conclusion that he did about human beings. What is humanity or what does it mean to be human? Because really – how awesome is it to use science fiction to teach us about our own reality?
Personally I wouldn’t go but I’d be more peaceful knowing humanity was adulhhood unaltered somewhere far away from my odtavia.
